Constellations.
The idea. Key rings. Air fresheners. Branded merchandise. Almost all cars come with a free extra. So to launch the new 2017 solar powered Prius, we gave away a free sun.
A truly one of a kind project with the honour of working with a leading astro physicist, to chart each sun to a precise location, creating Toyotas very own Constellation. To help owners instantly find their sun in the night sky, we designed and created a web app that allows you to turn any device into a virtual telescope.
The web app was not only designed to be used to locate individual stars but also to teach younger generations the wonders of the universe, and the power of solar energy, so we incorporated many more constellations that feature in the northern hemisphere's sky.
By switching the app to VR mode, it became a powerful sales tool for Toyota dealers across Europe. It provided an immersive 'fly-by' of the Prius constellation, and at the same time, helped to tell an innovative brand story.
First we plotted a map of the night sky, mapping the new Prius Constellation.

To educate and inspire we created bespoke illustrations to represent other constellations in the night sky.






To create a truly immersive experience we gave away custom VR headsets so users can turn any device into a virtual telescope.

Each Prius owner received a bespoke certificate containing their exact
co-ordinates of their sun. If held up to the sun the certificate would reveal the location of their sun within the constellation.

Buy a solar powered car, get a free sun. Simple. The campaign was a great success, all 100 cars were pre-ordered and had a positive impact on raising awareness of the cars new technology.
